We have a replica chamfron, cast directly from one in the Tower Armouries by Brian McKnight (RSC armourer), and that has a definitely offensive spike on it, which is unlikely to have been simply an attachment for anything, as it is approx 112-150mm in length, and is fluted and pointed.
There could have been different types/styles of chafrons around, some with the “offensive spike” as you call it already attached and some where you could change the device.

Thank you for the addition, Emma. There will be a more detailed post on the different parts of armour a bit further into the project.
